Karindundu factory sits in the lowlands of Mt. Kenya, near Karatina in Nyeri. It has 513 active members (349 men, 164 women), contributing and farming about 0.5 acres each. Farmers also grow crops such as macadamia, bananas and maize. After harvest, coffee cherries are delivered to the factory, where they are de-pulped, fermented overnight, washed, and dried on raised beds. Karindundu supports farmers with training on manure use, pruning, and fertilizer, and runs its own demonstration plot to aid education. In Kenya, most farmers own small plots, so cooperatives, such as this factory, handle processing, blending, deliveries, and paying farmers for their coffee, distributing wealth in the area.
