In the heart of Huila's Suaza municipality is Finca Los Andes, managed by producer Edernoman Toledo Charry. Spanning 16 hectares, the farm dedicates four hectares to high-density planting of Castillo F6, Catimor, Gesha, and Pink Bourbon. At harvest time, Edernoman has a team of 16 local staff members to hand-pick cherries.
At the end of last year, our founder, and head of all things coffee, Anth, spent some time in Colombia with our import partner, Osito, judging their annual Copa de Oro competition.
For several years now, Osito have been bringing together producers from Huila and Cauca, providing them with a platform to showcase their coffees to roasters and buyers from around the world. Last year, 120 lots were submitted. The judges cupped and scored the coffees, eventually narrowing them down to the top 15, 5 from each region - South, Central and West.
Edernoman Toledo’s coffee was the lot that stood out for Anth on every round of the competition as they narrowed down the lots. It’s a stunningly clean Pink Bourbon that reflects the careful processing and cherry selection.
On the final table Anth gave Toledo’s coffee his highest score of the competition. That it came second overall is a testament to the high standard of coffees in the competition (and the other judges bias towards a Gesha ;) ).
Competition coffee should be exceptional and the Copa de Oro coffees truly are.
